Minutes from last meeting:
The May meeting of the USS Columbus was called to order at 5:38 PM by First Officer Kathleen Cook.  Other members of the Executive Staff in attendance were Melinda Kincaid, Eric Davis and Kyle Curry.  No items were voted on and there was no new business to discuss.  There were 15 members and 5 guests present.

Honor Flight Columbus
On June 9, Kathleen Cook had the opportunity to work registration for the Honor Flight at Port Columbus.  That evening, she along with Stephen, Morgan and Wyatt handed out flags to families and friends waiting to welcome the veterans back from their day in Washington D.C. Pictures Wanted
We're still looking for information about the history and photos of the USS Columbus. We would like to get these items together so there is time to work on them before our 25th anniversary in 2014.  If you have items of interest e-mail them HERE!

Star Trek: TNG 25th Anniversary
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: TNG the PEZ Company is producing 150,000 sets of PEZ dispensers.  This set will be released sometime this fall.

On July 23, select theaters will be showing 2 episodes of the Next Generation: "Where no one has gone before" and "DataLore".  Local theaters holding this event include the Cinemark Movies 16 at the Stoneridge shopping Center, Gahanna and the AMC Easton Town Center 30.

Walter Koenig Star Celebration
Walter will be getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There's special project going on to send him a postcard from every state congratulating him on his star. Anyone wishing to participate can send a post card with a message to: Walter's Star, 3219 East Camelback Road, #226, Phoenix, AZ 85018

Universal Translator
The Universal Translator, an important component of the Star Trek universe is about to become a reality with software that will work on Android smartphones and Windows XP. BBN TransTalk is being developed by Raytheon.

Summer Safety Tips
July 4th celebrations will soon be in full swing. Here are some safety reminders:

1.  Don't leave children unattended with sparklers or other fireworks
2.  Don't take pets to see the fireworks.  It hurts their ears and scares them.
3.  When you're using fireworks keep a bucket of water close by in case of fire
4.  Don't wear loose fitting clothing when you're around fireworks as it could catch fire.
5.  Use safe practices when cooking on the grill, use the right tools and have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby.


USS Columbus Anniversary
This August marks our 23rd anniversary!  How do we want to celebrate? Please bring any ideas to the July meeting!

We would also like to start planning for our 25th anniversary in 2014!  We would like to get some definite ideas now, so we can start setting some funds aside to cover the cost of the event.

First Female Chinese Astronaut in Outer space
On June 16 China put a woman in space as part of a 3 person crew. Lia Lang is a 33 year old fighter pilot in China's Air Force.  Read the artlcle here.

Space News
The Voyager 1 space probe is headed for the boundary of our solar system, 11.1 billion miles from Earth.  Read the article here. 

Voyager 2 isn't far behind at 9.1 billion miles from Earth. Both probes were launched in 1977 to study Saturn, Jupiter and their moons but they have continued to send back information about the outer planets and beyond.


The new Mars rover, Curiosity, is scheduled to land on the red planet August 6 at 1:31 AM EDT. It was launched in November, 2011.  Read more about it here.

School Supply Drive to Kick off

Believe it or not, the school year is just around the corner so it's time to kick off our school supply drive.  Wal-Mart, Staples and other stores will begin their school supply sales after the July 4th holiday.  Once again the Columbus will be donating supplies to Hawthorne Elementary School, as we have done for the last three years.  If you see a great bargain on school supplies please pick up  a few items. Below is a list of items that students will need:

Region One News 
The Star Crafters program was created for crafters to exchange ideas, patterns and to introduce others to new crafts they haven't tried. It is headed by Teresa Remaly, the CO of the USS Peleliu.  Contact info will posted in a future PD.

The 2012 Starfleet International Conference will be held in Memphis, TN  August 3-5. The charities for the conference are St. Jude Children's hospital and The American Diabetes Association.
